Suggestions please!

I want to make my oldest son (age 7) a bed quilt that will last him through age 18 (so nothing novelty-ish or overly childish). I have chosen 8 Kona solids and about a dozen coordinating Kaffe Fasset fat quarters. I've wasted a ton of time brainstorming patterns. Can anyone make me some sugggestions??!...FYI - no paper piecing please.

Did you see Oh Fransson's Mod Quilt-a-long recently? I like the look of the mod squares - just an easy pattern with a more classic straight-forward looks. You could make her pattern bigger by using all 8 of the solids with Kaffe fabric. Check it out here: http://www.ohfransson.com/oh_fransson/quiltalong.html

a recent favorite of mine is the free pattern called "woodland garden" over at the free spirit fabrics site ... oops, looks like it's not on the site anymore, but google found the direct link: http://www.freespiritfabric.com/graphic-elements/gallerys/t185_1.pdf

I also like this one (Three Wishes, free on the Hoffman Fabrics site):

Bento Box! Put just solids in the center bit and mix the rest up maybe?

or maybe a curved piecing pattern like drunkards path.. or lay it out in your own pattern.

I'm actually having the exact same dilemma right now, but with my six year old son! I know I want to write something on it with Tonya's wonky letters http://lazygalquilting.blogspot.com/
I'm considering something like what Michelle suggested.
