Pastel Alternatives

For all of you out there in support of those nasty pastels, here's a few options I sketched up. Thoughts??

...and remember, I am supposed to work in some of the pink that was sent to me (used on the corner squares), but I just cannot figure out how to incorporate it!
Note that the triangles in the baskets are NOT done in pastels. They are dominant jewel tones, as this is what Laila used (all but the soft blue).

Oh, and using any of these pastel options sadly requires a run to the fabric store (aw, shucks!!)

All thoughts welcome...

I think that I like the darker blue ground better. It helps to highlight the pastel center block and embroidery while giving it a bit more grounding. (Just my opinion. :-0 )

Keep sketching ... I like seeing the design process.

Oh, this is fun. It's hard to tell from mockups, real fabric is easier, but I think a yellow that matches the yellow in the fabrics (brighter than what is in your mockup) on the border would draw out that color and make the whole thing more lively, less pastel-y.

The yellow flower basket would get lost if the border was a deeper, brighter yellow. In all honesty, I really don't like yellow a lot either... I can live with a soft butter color, but lemon yellow is not my thing. Keep thinking!

I like #3 (yellow) ... can't give a definitive answer why ... #3 pleases my eye.

I think the minty green works the best, because she obviously likes pastels, and it does pull her block and your next border together, and she doesn't seem to mind the busyness because her block is very busy to begin with. But honestly, if it was for me, I like that yellow, calmer and more neutral. Don't like the pink block and the blue seems a little overpowering. I love to see all the options, it's really great you can sketch it out and see how the block will look before you sew it!

I have to say, I like the original dark blue one a lot better than any of these -- I though that was brilliant! If I had to pick one of these, I'd pick the green. But don't be afraid to go with your instinct to not make it pastel... :)

Love the way you added to the existing blocks and were able to display them. Nice job!

I am replying to your comment on my blog, Artquiltmaker. Yes, the circles are raw edge when they are sewn down. I followed up your comment with one with more explanation, so perhaps you want to go back and look at it....?
